Worth Passing Along

Dear Clients, Planning Partners, and Friends of Cain, Cain & Janik,

If you're looking for Marty in the summer and he's not in the office, there's one place you're likely to find him. We live across the street from the Trails Golf Club, but it won't be on the golf course. He'll be in our backyard checking on his tomatoes.

To call it a garden almost seems unfair. Our backyard isn't all that large, but somehow Marty has turned one corner of it into what I affectionately call his urban tomato farm. His love of gardening runs deep. His grandparents always had a garden; his dad did too, and now Marty is even grooming our son, Stephen, to carry on the tomato-farming tradition.

Every spring, Marty and his mom coordinate delivery to Norman of the special variety of tomato plants that the family gets near Anadarko. Then the real work begins. He studies the soil, reads everything he can find, and tends those plants with remarkable care. The result is a harvest that amazes me year after year.

But if you ask me, the tomatoes aren't really the point.

The point is sharing them.

Every summer, our neighbors, family, friends, and even my dad and several of our clients at Sooner Station look forward to Marty's deliveries. I jokingly call it his "tomato ministry." I think seeing someone enjoy that first homegrown tomato of the season brings him almost as much satisfaction as growing it.

I hope you're finding time this summer to enjoy whatever brings you peace—whether it's a garden, a porch swing, a family barbecue, or simply sharing a fresh tomato with someone you love.

With care and appreciation,
Tamara Cain
